Always wanted to learn watercolour painting? Now is your chance! This 8 week course is suitable for beginners, or those wishing to brush up their skills. We will cover all the basic techniques, plus experiment with different materials and approaches for achieving more expressive details and contemporary styles. We will work from still life objects in the studio as well as landscape and cityscape photo references. Come along and have fun making art with other people. The course will involve: Week 1: "Introduction to Watercolour" - we will work on watercolour techniques such as paint thickness, mixing colour, applying washes, building up layers; tonking, and splatter and spray techniques Week 2: “Colour Mixing Approaches” – we will learn how to use the colour wheel to mix “warm” and “cool” colours, natural greens, and interesting greys, then do some small studies using cool, warm and complementary colour palettes Week 3: “Wet into Wet Techniques” – we will learn how to exploit the fluidity of watercolour to create interesting skies and cloudscapes, as well as more contemporary abstract designs Week 4: “Watercolour Plants & Flowers” – learn how to build up a painting in layers working from life, using plant and flower subjects in the studio Week 5: "Expressive Watercolour Landscapes" - step by step guidance on working loosely to achieve fresh, expressive landscape paintings (using photo references) Week 6: “Watercolour Animals & Birds” – we will apply the techniques practised in earlier weeks to learn how to create a painting of an animal (or bird), from reference photos. We will work through the painting in stages, with individual tutor guidance as we go. Week 7: "Working on a coloured ground" - we will use grey mixed media paper, and watercolour with white gouache, to achieve a more illustrative look (still life, and photo references). Week 8: “Line & Wash Techniques” - we will practice drawing objects and cityscapes with fineliner pens, then adding colour using watercolour wash. We will experiment with ”blind drawing”, contour drawing, ink dip pens and other techniques to “loosen up” your style! Single classes can be done on a Pay As You Go basis and are £24/class. All materials and refreshments are included in the course fee.
We hope to avoid cancelling classes or workshops whenever possible but sometimes life happens and it's unavoidable. When we have cancelled you will be offered either a refund or the opportunity to transfer your booking to another class/time. We can't offer refunds if you can't make it to a class or workshop but if there are places available on another day we will do our best to fit you in. If you cancel 14 days or more before an event we will refund you if we are able to re-sell your place(s).
