Spring Term - Spotlight on NGS

Starts Tuesday 16 January, 10 - 12.30pm

Class Details

This 10 week course will explore the world class collection at the Scottish National Gallery and discover ways it can inspire our own work. Drawing from art, we can get under the skin of a painting and learn from artists from Velasquez to Van Gogh, Anne Redpath to Rembrandt. Spending at least 4 weeks at the Gallery, we will work our way around the collection, exploring themes such as portraiture, landscape, composition, tone and storytelling. Students will have a chance to follow their own interests, as well as learn different technical approaches to drawing. Returning to the studio the next week we will delve into these themes further, working from life in a similar way to the artists we discover. Exploring new materials we will work from our gallery drawings as well as still lives and models. This exciting new course will be delivered by tutor Tess Glen. Tess is a painter who works from life in a spontaneous and playful way. She depicts humorous and dramatic scenes influenced by her surroundings and by literature. Drawing is always the starting point for Tess and she loves sharing different approaches in her teaching. Tess completed the Postgraduate programme at The Royal Drawing School in London and has a BA in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art. She also teaches on the Young Artist Programme at The Royal Drawing School. All materials and refreshments for the studio classes are included in the course fee. Taster classes may be available or you can come along on a "pay as you go" basis for £25/class if the class isn't full.
