Festive Still Life in Oil Paint

Class Details

Paint the glow of midwinter in this relaxed, hands on workshop. Over the course of the day you will set up and paint your own festive still life using water soluble oil paints, the oils that clean up with plain water, so there are no solvents and no smell, just rich, vivid colour. We will work from a table laid for the darkest, cosiest time of year: think pomegranates with their jewelled seeds, clementines, sprigs of holly and winter greenery, walnuts in their shells, ribbons and glass baubles. You are also welcome to bring along any festive objects of your choosing. I will show you how to build a composition that feels interesting but not crowded, then take you through the painting in clear stages, from a loose underpainting to the final glints of light. Along the way you will learn how to mix a warm, glowing palette from a small set of colours. You will leave with a finished small painting, a handful of techniques you can use on any still life, and the confidence to try water soluble oils at home. No experience with oils is needed. If you have painted before, you are very welcome and there will be plenty to add to your skills. All materials are provided. Students are welcome to bring a packed lunch for the short lunch break. Alternatively there are excellent local shops and cafes close by.
